Robust Physician Recruitment Brings Top Ophthalmologists, Optometrists to Cincinnati

Cincinnati Eye Institute is a partner practice of CVP Physicians, which includes two ophthalmology practices in Cincinnati (CEI and Apex), Dayton, Toledo, and two in Virginia. Candy Simerson, CVP’s Chief Development Officer, is leading a robust physician recruitment, bringing top ophthalmology talent to the Greater Cincinnati area.

“We are creating a comprehensive plan for recruitment so that candidates understand the environment they will be entering,” says Simerson. “Many of the physicians within CVP are key opinion leaders within ophthalmology, enhancing our ability to recruit exceptionally talented physicians with unique skill sets.”

The practices within CVP have longstanding reputations within the communities they serve, facilitating CVP’s goal to build a company that the best doctors want to join and grow their practices. The CVP network includes every sub-specialty within ophthalmology, including cornea, retina, glaucoma, oculoplastics, neuro-ophthalmology, anterior segment, pediatric, and comprehensive ophthalmology.

These days it’s important to start the recruitment process much earlier — ideally, two years prior to a physician retiring, since it’s hard to say how long it will take to find the right candidate to replace them. Simerson notes that candidates now begin looking for jobs the summer before they graduate. This means that competition is intense among candidates. Creating a strong onboarding program for new physicians provides a solid foundation upon which they can begin to build their practice. Not only are they educated about CVP’s history and culture, they also learn how to navigate CVP’s systems to provide the best quality patient care.

“It teaches them about their role in the practice and whom to contact when they have questions,” says Simerson. “Taking the time to build the foundation creates a better experience for all stakeholders, which includes patients, staff, and physicians.”

The demand for quality physicians is extraordinary, but CVP’s overriding objective is getting the right physician fit for the practice. That’s why over the summer, CVP Physicians hosted a two-day orientation for nine new hires — three optometrists and six ophthalmologists. They discussed compliance issues, presented speakers and offered other engaging activities, such as a review of profile assessments that determine personality styles.

“We talked about the best ways to interact with other people throughout the healthcare system, because it’s all about relationships,” says Simerson. “If people understand themselves and how they interact with others, it’s really helpful.”

According to Simerson, CVP Physicians has evolved into one of the nation’s largest, most prestigious ophthalmology networks providing the full spectrum of eye care services to the Greater Cincinnati market.

“CVP Physicians maintains teaching affiliations at local universities and invests in clinical research and new technologies providing leading-edge solutions and advanced treatment options for the community,” she says.

CVP’s commitment to a robust physician recruitment model results in world-class eye care for patients in the Greater Cincinnati region.
