Respect from one’s peers is one of the highest accolades. So, when Mark Mandell-Brown, M.D., was nominated to become president of the world’s largest cosmetic surgery society, it was quite an honor for one of Cincinnati’s top cosmetic surgeons.
“It is the quintessential honor and quite humbling to be selected to lead the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS),” says Dr. Mandell-Brown, who will officially assume his presidential duties during the organization’s 35th annual meeting to be held in February at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. He currently serves as vice president.
With 1,600 physician members worldwide, he notes, the Chicago-based academy has members on all continents. “At our annual scientific meetings to advance cosmetic surgery, we have physicians from Australia, Canada, Thailand, India, China and Europe, as well from throughout the United States.”
His colleagues — including the current president, Chris Lowery, D.O. — believe Dr. Mandell-Brown has been instrumental in advancing the cosmetic academy via the many integral positions he has held, and they agree he is well-prepared to take over the organization’s reigns.
“When I pass the baton to Dr. Mandell-Brown, I know our academy will be in great hands,” Dr. Lowery states.
Colleen Nolan, AACS executive director, echoes similar thoughts.
“We are excited for Dr. Mandell-Brown’s passion for the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery and his leadership abilities to help further advance our organization,” she says.
Initially appointed to the Academy Foundation, the fund-raising arm of the AACS, Dr. Mandell-Brown has served on the board of trustees and as treasurer. “We raised money to support education events as well as foster research grants in cosmetic surgery and non-surgical procedures,” he recalls.
He subsequently headed the fellowship training program to help prepare future cosmetic surgeons. Under Dr. Mandell-Brown’s guidance, the fellowships were increased from 12 to 20, monthly video webinars featuring cosmetic topics were initiated, a comprehensive reading bibliography was created, and loosely organized preceptorships were unified.
“The AACS fellowships provide the most comprehensive training in the field of cosmetic surgery to prepare our physicians,” Dr. Mandell-Brown adds.
Realizing the need to improve cosmetic training, he initiated workshops to foster instruction in the latest techniques such as Brazilian Butt Lift, Face Lifts, Breast Augmentations and Lifts, as well as Mommy Make Overs. He has directed workshops in Miami, Las Vegas, San Diego and New Orleans, as well as Cincinnati.
When guest physicians arrive in Cincinnati, Dr. Mandell-Brown loves to showcase the city’s famous institutions like Skyline Chili, Graeters Ice Cream, Montgomery Inn Ribs and — if the Reds are in town — a trip to the stadium.
He has also served as a board examiner and exam question contributor for the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery. Candidates are required to take a six-hour oral examination followed by a four-hour written exam the next day.
Dr. Mandell-Brown was honored for his educational efforts in 2017, earning the “Webster Award.” Named after famous Boston plastic surgeon and AACS founder, Richard Webster, M.D., the award is given each year to one outstanding academy member in recognition of their contributions to the academy.
Design With Your Rejuvenated Skin's Maintenance In Mind
With an emphasis on prevention and maintenance, Dr. Mark Mandell-Brown designed skin care products to help his patients maintain their skin quality.
“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” the Cincinnati plastic surgeon says. “When we perform facial rejuvenation surgery, maintenance of the skin quality is important after the procedure. Likewise, some patients can put off procedures if they properly maintain their skin. Our products are reasonably priced so that patients can easily afford them. In fact, the Mandell-Brown skin care products are often more cost-effective than popular high-end products.”
