Anthology: Memory Care When You Need It

Anthology: Memory Care When You Need It

“This is an exciting time at Anthology Senior Living,” says Memory Care Specialist Brenda Gurung.

She says residency at Anthology is growing, and she’s especially proud of a new Memory Care program designed “to recognize residents’ agency, ability and sense of purpose.”

It’s a monumental initiative for Anthology — one which goes beyond a single building or region. Anthology Senior Living includes senior living communities owned and operated by Anthology, as well as third-party operated communities offering senior living options for independent living, assisted living and memory care across the United States. There are over 40 locations in 16 different states. Three are here in greater Cincinnati: Blue Ash, Anderson Township and Mason.

The Memory Care program has eight key components, and Gurung highlights three of them. “We’re training our team members on ‘empowering care assistance’ – that is, offering support to each resident individually in a way that recognizes their agency, ability and sense of purpose.”

Additionally, Gurung says it’s crucial that Anthology learns about each of its residents on a meaningful level. “We’ve revised our resident ‘Life Story’ interview to shift towards purposeful topics and away from superficial ones. We ask open-ended, inclusive questions like, ‘Who are the people who are important to you?’, ‘What are you proud of?’ and ‘What do you think of when you think of home?’”

The answers, Gurung says, enable staff to build a crucial bridge between team members and residents.

Anthology takes a proactive, personalized approach to support people with signs and behaviors common for those who have dementia, such as sensory interventions to help provide calm and comfort.

Many of its residents have unique medical needs or require other types of support. Anthology’s facilities specialize in independent living with support just a few steps away. “Our Assisted Living and Memory Care neighborhoods have trained caregivers ready to assist 24 hours a day, with nurse leaders who oversee personalized care,” Gurung says.

In addition to the new Memory Care program, Anthology residents enjoy active event schedules, guided fitness programs and friendly community gatherings. It’s important, Gurung says, that residents understand their life’s accomplishments are still unfolding.

“We offer a range of services and supportive care, including independent living, assisted living and Memory Care,” Gurung says. “Our apartment suites are beautifully designed and modern. The communities themselves have a variety of gathering spaces — whether you’d like to play cards, exercise or participate in arts programs.”

While the impacts of aging and care continue to evolve, Gurung says Anthology remains dedicated to building a true feeling of home.

“There are purposeful activities throughout the day, every day,” she says. “Meals are prepared by seasoned chefs and presented attractively. And the entire philosophy has shifted to focus on seniors’ choices, abilities and their own agency while still providing support where needed.

“We offer a healthy roster of vibrant activities daily. Life is different here at Anthology!”
